Which Bookseller Is Best For the Author?
If you buy a print-on-demand book straight from Lulu, a higher percentage of the purchase price goes to the author. But buying a book on sites like Amazon and Barnes & Noble also boosts the book’s position in search results and causes it to appear in “people who bought this book” promotions. And Mark is a big advocate of supporting local booksellers, so there’s something to be said for special-ordering the book from a brick-and-mortar store. (See ISBNs below for special orders.)
Pick whichever bookseller is best for you.
Can I Give the Ebook As a Gift?
The Kindle edition makes a great last-minute gift. Click the “Buy for others” button, and you’ll just need to know the recipient’s email address. You can time delivery for a specific day (Christmas, Hanukkah, birthday, etc.). And they can choose to convert it to Amazon credit if they already have the book or don’t think it’s something they’d care to read.
You can also buy the NOOK book as a gift for someone else. Just click the “Buy As Gift” link on the product page. You’ll have the opportunity to enter your gift recipient’s email address and an optional gift message. You can also schedule the gift for delivery on a specific date. When you are ready to place your order, click the “Add to Cart” button. If you don’t already have an account on the Barnes & Noble website, you’ll be prompted to create one during checkout.
Which Print Edition Should I Buy?
There are three different print editions. The best deal is typically the digest format paperback (8.5″ x 5.5″), available only on Lulu. It’s printed on white paper, which to some people gives it a less “legit book” feel. The slightly larger trade format paperback (9″ x 6″) has fewer pages, but is printed on off-white paper of a heavier weight, making it a bit more expensive. In case you feel like splurging, there’s also a fancy hardcover edition (9″ x 6″). The cover on this casewrap edition is especially beautiful, but the price is much higher, because the print-on-demand process is more expensive for hardcover books. The trade paperback and hardcover editions are available nearly everywhere books are sold, via special order.
Regardless of which print edition you order, expect some delay, since the books are printed as they’re ordered. This approach to printing books is more costly on a per-unit basis, but has revolutionized the world of self-publishing, since there’s no longer any need to pay upfront for a print run of a large number of books, many of which could end up sitting in a warehouse and ultimately being recycled.
